General Election Results - 24 July 1972

General elections were held in Anguilla on Monday, 24 July 1972.  The election was the first on the island following assumption of direct rule by the British government the previous year resulting in the Anguilla council being created as a legal body in Britain.  It was also the first election held under the Anguilla Elections Ordinance of 1971 that sanctioned the division of the island into seven constituencies.

The election was won by Ronald Webster’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP) which ended up with six of the seven seats. The remaining seat went to Emile Gumbs.  Webster became Chairman of the Anguilla Council.

Voter turnout was 46.9%.

On 10 February 1976, Webster was sworn in as Anguilla first Chief Minister.
