Mr. Charles was born and raised in New Field Village in the constituency. He attended primary school in the constituency and is deeply connected to the community.
After primary school, he attended the Seventh Day Adventist School and completed secondary school in St. Thomas. He studied business administration at the University of the Virgin Islands and completed his education at the Institute of Design Construction Technology in New York. He worked in New York and St. Thomas prior to returning to Antigua, where he started a number of successful businesses.
A self-made, successful businessman, Mr. Charles started Antigua Concrete Services in 1998 and formed a number of other successful companies in construction and development. He is known as a fair and progressive businessman and manager who looks to bring his business-oriented approach to government to make it more efficient and work for people.
An avid sportsman, Mr. Charles played cricket and football for the New Field School and village teams. He received his nickname "Tamo" while playing cricket internationally. The name was given to him by the Australian fast bowler, Jeff Thompson.
From 2004-2007, Mr. Charles served as a Senator under the Antigua Labour Party. Having witnessed first hand the oppressive and dictatorial style of the ALP hierarchy and having recongnised that the ALP focused exclusively on enriching themselves and their cronies and not enough on helping the people of Antigua and Barbuda. Tamo resigned his seat as a Senator and also resigned from the disgraced Antigua Labour Party.
In 2008, Mr. Charles was selected to serve as a Senator in the United Progressive Party Administration.
Mr. Charles is a strong leader who puts the interests of the people ahead of party. He is a strong and independent voice who isn't afraid to stand up for what's right and speaks truth to power.
Mr. Charles is guided by a core philosophy that puts people first. He believes in building an opportunity society rooted in the idea that individuals should take responsibility for their actions. He also believes that people are born with an independent spirit and, he believes that a society should encourage people to achieve their goals independent of government.
