In accordance with the advice of the Honourable Prime Minister, His Excellency the Governor General dissolved Parliament on 5 April 1980.  The Writs of Election fixed 14 April 1980 as Nomination Day and 24 April 1980 as Polling Day. There were a total of 28,906 electors on the Register of Elections.

A total of 45 candidates were nominated to contest the General Elections in the 17 constituencies: Antigua Labour Party (ALP) – 17; Progressive Labour Movement (PLM) – 16; Antigua Caribbean Liberation Movement (ACLM) – 9; Independents – 3.

At the end of the count, the results were as follows: Antigua Labour Party (ALP) – 13; Progressive Labour Movement (PLM) – 3; Independent – 1.
