Austin Husbands
Candidate for St. James North

dot PROFILE

Austin Husbands was raised in his St. James North constituency, where both his parents, Iris and Harry Husbands, were teachers.  He is deeply religious and a strong believer in the power of prayer.  He knows his constituents well as a neighbour, a banker, musician, sports enthusiast, water sports facility operator, and community activist.  He has been bombarded with their concerns as they relate to:

  • Access to, and preservation of the beaches
  • Recreational and training facilities for our youth
  • Care of the elderly
  • Escalating land prices that have become out of reach

Austin agrees with people who argue that unless government intervenes, residents of St. James and Barbados as a whole will wake up one morning and discover that we have lost our country.  It is for this reason that he has stood up to be counted as willing to stop the rot.

A former student of St James Mixed School and Harrison College, Austin brings to politics a sound training as a Banker, Entrepreneur and Manager.  He believes that Barbadians need to become more enterprising to spot niches in the market and to create wealth and employment.  For him government has the obligation to create the conditions for citizens to do so.

Austin feels strongly about the way tourism, our major industry, has developed to integrate Barbadians primarily as workers.  He wants to see more local entrepreneurs making tourism their business by getting into sports and cultural tourism.  His sponsorship of football, cricket, volleyball and water sports is intended to encourage young people to seize any emerging career opportunities therein.

Married to Liz for the past 22 years, Austin is the proud father of five children.
