Dr. David Cleveland
Estwick was born and bred in the St. Philip West constituency,
which he ably represents as a Member of Parliament. His
intimate knowledge of the needs of his constituency and his
desire to help, have increased his frustration as an
Opposition Member of Parliament. He is appalled at the
high levels of unemployment among young people, the poor state
of roads, the pockets of poverty and the poor delivery of
services in parishes like St. Philip. In general he is
very concerned about the widening gulf between the rich and
poor in Barbados. He believes that only the Democratic
Labour Party, which puts ordinary people first, can
systematically address these issues.
Dr. Estwick received his secondary education
at Princess Margaret School and his tertiary education at
Wittenberg University and the University of the West Indies,
where he qualified as a medical doctor.
Throughout his academic and working career
Dr. Estwick has shown an interest in the role of economics in
the social development of nations. He is convinced that
Barbados needs to focus on getting more citizens involved in
economic development, not only as workers but also as
entrepreneurs. Hence his indictment of the Barbados
Labour Party for tolerating the non-participation of large
numbers of citizens in mainstream economic
activity.
Dr. Estwick would like to see sports playing
a more important role in the lives of Barbadians. For
him, sports bring many health, economic and social benefits to
those who participate. An enlightened government would
use the interest of young people in sports to integrate them
more fully into the mainstream of society. It is for
this reason that he sponsors several football clubs in his
constituency such as Brereton Braves, Villa United and
Fairview Ballers. Similar opportunities could also be
created in the field of music and entertainment.
Dr. Estwick is married to Margaret and they
have three children. |
