Undene Whittaker was
born in St. Michael and has lived for eighteen years in her St. Michael South East constituency.
Her intimate involvement in the lives of her constituents has
led her to believe that the main issues that retard their
progress are:
- Unemployment and underemployment
- Poor housing
- The decline of community
Undene is particularly concerned about the
plight of single mothers and unemployed young people.
She believes that a collective approach to their problems is
needed. It is for this reason that she is an active
member of women's organizations, community groups and the
trade union movement. She is convinced that the
Democratic Labour Party has the philosophy and commitment to
solve the problems of the disadvantaged members of society.
Undene is a graduate of St. Michael School,
Erdiston Teacher's College and the College of Preceptors in
England. She has also followed several short courses at
the University of the West Indies to equip herself for the
challenges of effective, national leadership, particularly on
issues of gender. She currently works as an educator,
community activist and tireless campaigner for justice and
equality.
Undene is a powerful advocate for the rights
of women, children, young people and the working class in
general, both nationally and internationally. She
was President of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT), Vice
President of the Caribbean Union of Teachers and represented
the Caribbean on the Civil Society Network for the Education
of the Americas.
She established the St. Michael South East
Craft Guild over twenty years ago, with the objective of
providing women with life skills, which would generate income
for families and the community in general. She is also
the Manager of the community cultural group, "Little People
Fun And Frolic".
She wants to see a more enterprising and
self-reliant Barbados and she believes that this is best
achieved under the Democratic Labour Party. |
