Akil Umi, a 53 year old vendor will face the polls for the first time as the candidate for the People's Democratic Congress, which was formed in January 2005 having evolved out of the Society for Mass Freedom and Democracy.
To honor his African heritage, about 5 years ago, Umi changed his name from William Randolph Morris.
