The last 50 years of our history have been characterized by
an unswerving commitment to democracy, the rule of law and
social justice.
The challenge
facing Barbados is to modify our terms of governance to better
meet the needs of our changing society, to protect our sovereignty
and to respond to non-traditional threats to our security.
The Barbados
Labour Party reaffirms the values that define the character
of our nation.
We see
it as our mission to defend and advance the following:
- Integrity
in all areas of governance and public life, with the public
interest paramount in all decisions, which should be transparent
and carried out in accordance with the law.
- There
shall be effective mechanisms of accountability
- Parliament
shall retain its essential role as a balance against executive
power.
- An
independent judiciary shall be a crucial bastion for the
interpretation of the law and the settlement of disputes,
and shall ensure that Government should never be above the
law and that all citizens be treated fairly.
The BLP
remains committed to Barbados’ transition to a Republic
within the Commonwealth; with a native son or daughter always
as our Head of State; and with the supremacy of the people
impregnably enshrined in our centuries-old tradition of parliamentary
democracy.
We shall,
in the next term, settle the key elements of our republican
form of government and parliamentary reform, thence to proceed
to a Constitution of our independent sovereign state that
is a proclamation of the people and the Parliament of Barbados
and not that of the United Kingdom.
A BLP Government will give effect to the principal
recommendations of the Constitution Review Commission.
We will strengthen the Charter of Rights for the better
functioning of Civil Society.
