BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 19 March 2013 (CMC) – The Barbados government says it intends to invest BDS$600 million (One BDS dollar = US$0.50 cents) as part of a new stimulus to improve the local economy and create at least 1,000 new jobs.

“Together when the BDS$355 million taken from this new stimulus package and the BDS$300 million from traditional estimates, we anticipate an injection of BDS$600 million in capital works spending.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, 18 March 2013 (CMC) – Former High Court judge, Anthony Carmona, 60, was sworn in as Trinidad and Tobago’s fifth head of state on Monday at a public ceremony held at the Hasley Crawford Stadium, on the outskirts of the capital.

In a ceremony carried live on radio and television, Carmona, a graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Hugh Wooding Law School, succeeds educator George Maxwell Richards, who ended a 10 year term in the ceremonial post on Sunday. Continue reading

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, 17 March 2013 (CMC) – Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace has accused Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of bringing the Vincentian economy to its worst state since the country gained independence in 1979.

In an address to the New York chapter of the New Democratic Party (NDP), on Saturday, Eustace accused the current administration of mismanaging the economy.

“Let him (Gonsalves) dispute that. In 2012, to our eternal shame, St. Vincent and the Grenadines exported EC$1.1 million in bananas. We used to do that in a week,” Eustace said, noting that the country’s record in banana earning for any one year is EC$111 million. Continue reading

JOHN’S, Antigua, 16 March 2013 (CMC) – The brother of former West Indies cricket captain, Viv Richards, is among two new senators named by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer after he dismissed two government legislators who failed to support legislation for his administration’s Citizenship by Investment Programme that he said would result in significant economic gains for Antigua and Barbuda.

A government statement said that Prime Minister Spencer has advised Governor-General Dame Louise Lake-Tack to appoint Mervyn Richards and Richard Lewis as senators following the dismissal of Colin Derrick and Anthony Stuart. Continue reading

Speaking at a public meeting to thank supporters for the three years of legal battles to determine whether or not he and his Education Minister Petter Saint Jean were legally nominated to contest the last general election, Skerrit said that he wants the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) to remain in opposition for another five year term. BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 1 March 2013 (CMC) – Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas has announced a minor re-shuffle of his Cabinet following a High Court ruling on Thursday that the appointment of Jason Hamilton as the Attorney General and as a fourth Senator in the National Assembly was declared null and void.

In a radio and television broadcast on Thursday night, Dr. Douglas said that Education and Information, Agriculture, Marine Resources and Cooperatives Nigel Carty had resigned to facilitate the re-appointment of Hamilton, the youngest ever attorney general here, back into his post. BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 25 February 2013 (CMC) – Less than a week after he led the Barbados labour Party (BLP) into its second consecutive defeat, Owen Arthur, has been replaced as leader of the party.

Mia Mottley, a former attorney general, who in 2010 lost the leadership of the BLP, was named as the new leader, by BLP executive member flanked by 13 parliamentary members.
