Belize Opposition describe budget as “noodles budget”

Belize FlagBELMOPAN, Belize, 25 March 2014 (CMC) – Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca led the condemnation of the 2014 national budget that Prime Minister Dean Barrow presented to Parliament more than two weeks ago, describing the fiscal package as “a noodles budget”.

Prime Minister Barrow had presented a BZ$934.3 million tax free budget noting that apart from the fact there would be no new taxes, there would also be no overall spending cuts. Continue reading

Belize government presents BD$1.9 billion budget to Parliament

Dean_Barrow_Budget_2014BELMOPAN, Belize, 8 March 2014 (CMC) – Prime Minister Dean Barrow has presented a BD$1.9 billion (One Belize dollar =US$0.50 cents) budget to Parliament telling Belizeans that the outlook for 2014 is one “full of promise”.

But as he delivered the fiscal package on Friday, hundreds of teachers were demonstrating nearby for higher wages but Barrow insisted the offer to the members of the Belize National Teachers Union (BTNU) by his administration was “fair and generous and the best it can responsibly do”.

Belize and Guatemala sign new agreement as they seek to resolve border dispute

Belize FlagWASHINGTON, 25 January 2014 (CMC) – Belize and Guatemala have signed an agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between as they seek to end a border dispute going back to several decades.

Belize Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington and his Guatemalan counterpart Fernando Carrera met here on Friday in the presence of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza. Continue reading

From time immemorial, each New Year brings with it a rekindling of hope and a renewal of optimism. For Belize in 2013, there will be a very early realization of this promise of brighter prospects. Our national reset will receive an immediate stimulus by the signing, in the first part of January, of a legal agreement that will resolve once and for all the crippling commercial debt burden that has threatened to turn Belize into an economic basket case. Belize’s UDP Government Wins 2012 General Election

BELIZE CITY – Belize’s governing United Democratic Party (UDP) has won a narrow election victory, local media report.

According to unofficial tallies, the UDP has 17 seats, the opposition People’s United Party (PUP) 14, according to Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai.

The voting “went smoothly in most areas,” Tamai said, with a turnout of approximately 73.11 percent, according to official results.

Voters Choosing New Government In Belize

(BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC) – Belizeans are voting for a new government in a general election on Wednesday that is virtually a straight fight between the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) and the main opposition People’s United Party (PUP).
