Former parliamentarian and activist Glenroy Straughn dies at 86

BARBADOS 13 April 2013 – Former parliamentarian for St Joseph from 1958 to 1961, former chairman of the Transport Board, member of the Bussa Foundation and social activist, Glenroy Straughn is dead. Straughn celebrated his 86th birthday on February 12.

He passed away around twelve o’clock Friday after ailing for several years as a result of Alzheimer’s which forced him to be institutionalised.  Continue reading

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 9 April 2013 (CMC) – The Central Bank of Barbados Tuesday said that the Barbados economy contracted by 0.4 per cent in the first three months of 2013 and urged the authorities to put “back on track” the fiscal consolidation strategy as well as a new medium term adjustment strategy to turn around the island’s economic fortunes.

In its review of the Barbados economic performance fore the first quarter of this year, the Central bank said that on current trends there may be no real increase in the contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) from the tourism or international business sectors in 2013. Continue reading

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 19 March 2013 (CMC) – The Barbados government says it intends to invest BDS$600 million (One BDS dollar = US$0.50 cents) as part of a new stimulus to improve the local economy and create at least 1,000 new jobs.

“Together when the BDS$355 million taken from this new stimulus package and the BDS$300 million from traditional estimates, we anticipate an injection of BDS$600 million in capital works spending.

Barbados Government to spend more in 2013-14

barbados-flagBRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 13 March 2013 (CMC) – The Barbados government says it plans to spend an estimated BDS$3.8 billion (One BDS dollar = US$0.50 cents) during the 2013-14 fiscal year, according to the estimates laid in Parliament.

The Freundel Stuart government which was re-elected to office by a narrow 16-14 margin in the February 21 general election will spend BDS$227.5 million more than had been budgeted for the 2012-13 revised figure. Continue reading

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 25 February 2013 (CMC) – Less than a week after he led the Barbados labour Party (BLP) into its second consecutive defeat, Owen Arthur, has been replaced as leader of the party.

Mia Mottley, a former attorney general, who in 2010 lost the leadership of the BLP, was named as the new leader, by BLP executive member flanked by 13 parliamentary members.

Opinion poll predicts victory for opposition party in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 19 February 2013 (CMC) – The main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is likely to win as many as 20 seats in Thursday’s general election, according to the latest opinion poll published here on Tuesday.

The poll by the Caribbean Development Research Services Inc (CADRES), shows that the BLP, lead by former prime minister Owen Arthur could win between 17 and 20 of the 30 seats to be contested in the general election.

It said that the incumbent Democratic Labour Party (DLP) headed by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart “will occupy the opposition benches with between 10 and 13 seats”. Continue reading

Barbados on “fiscal cliff” warns Opposition Leader

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 11 February 2013 (CMC)– Opposition Leader Owen Arthur is warning of a “fiscal cliff” in Barbados and accuses the Freundel Stuart government of putting the country in that crisis.

Addressing a political meeting of his Barbados Labour Party (BLP) on Sunday night, Arthur, who is seeking to regain the government he lost in 2008, said that the decision of the government to call the general election so late could have an effect on the economy particularly as it relates to the government’s Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure. BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 8 February 2013 (CMC) – Barbados two main political parties stepped up their campaign ahead of the February 21 general election with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and the main challenger for his job having differing views on the socio-economic development of the country over the past five years.

68 candidates to contest Barbados 2013 election

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 8 February 2013 – Sixty-eight candidates, including eight independents, have been nominated to contest the February 21 general elections, according to electoral officials.

Both the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and the main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) have nominated candidates to contest all 30 seats in the Barbados parliament.

The field includes 12 female candidates (BLP – 7, DLP – 5) and 22 new comers (BLP – 11, DLP – 5, Others – 6).

Barbados opposition party continues attack on government ahead of general election

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 5 February 2013 (CMC) – The main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) continued its criticism of the Freundel Stuart government as it urged supporters to ensure the defeat of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in the February 21 general election.

Barbados political parties nominate candidates for 2013 election

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, 1 February 2013 (CMC) – The two main political parties here have nominated candidates to contest the 30 seats in the February 21 general elections ahead of the official Nomination day on February 6.
