General elections were held in the Bahamas on 2 May 1962 for all 33 seats in the House of Assembly, the first under universal suffrage.
Electoral System
Members of the House of Assembly are elected from single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. The majority party then selects the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Governor-General.
Political Parties
Three parties contested the election - the United Bahamian Party (UBP), the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), and the Labour Party.
Results
Whereas the Progressive Liberal Party won the most votes, the United Bahamian Party won the most seats, largely as a result of gerrymandering. |
