
General elections were held in the Bahamas on 10 January 1967 for all 38 seats in the House of Assembly. he number of seats was raised from 33 prior to the 1967 elections.
Electoral System
Members of the House of Assembly are elected from single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. The majority party then selects the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Governor-General.
Political Parties
Four parties contested the election - the United Bahamian Party (UBP), the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), the Labour Party, and the National Democratic Party.
Results
The result was a tie between the Progressive Liberal Party and the United Bahamian Party, both of which won 18 seats. In a reversal of the last election (in which the PLP received the most votes but the UBP won the most seats), this time the PLP won fewer votes but was able to form the country's first black-led government with the support of the sole Labour Party MP Randol Fawkes. |
