General Election Results - 30 June 1993
Parliament Building, Belize

General elections were held in Belize on 30 June 1993 for all 29 seats in the House of Representatives using a first-past-the-post system.

Elections were held following the premature dissolution of the Hose of Representatives 15 months before the normal expiry of its term. General elections had previously taken place in September 1989.

Prime Minister (at independence in 1981) George Price called the premature general elections to seek a new mandate after Great Britain confirmed that if was decreasing its military presence in its former colony of British Honduras and the president of Belize’s often hostile neighbour, Guatemala, was forced out of office by the military. The latter had traditionally been the strongest proponents of Guatemala’s territorial claims on Belize.

Political Parties & Candidates

A total of 60 candidates contested the election. As usual, the main contestants in the 1993 legislative elections were Price’s ruling People’s United Party (PUP) and the somewhat-divided United Democratic Party (UDP), headed by Manuel Esquivel.

Results

On polling day, although the People's United Party received the most votes, the United Democratic Party-National Alliance for Belizean Rights alliance won more seats. The conservative UDP-NABR alliance turned the tables on the labour-oriented PUP, picking up three additional seats to arrive at an absolute parliamentary majority of 16.

Voter Turnout

Voter turnout was 72.10%

Post-election

On 2 July, Esquivel was sworn in for a second term (after 1984-1989) as Prime Minister. Three days later, a new 15-member Cabinet was named.

The election would be Price's last as PUP leader after over 35 years. He was succeeded as party leader in 1996 by Said Musa.
