District 4: Demerara-Mahaica

Demerara-Mahaica is a region bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Mahaica-Berbice to the east, the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice to the south and the region of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara to the west. It contains the country's capital Georgetown. Other towns in the region include Buxton, Enmore, Victoria and Paradise.

The Demerara-Mahaica Region extends East of the Demerara River to the Western bank of the Mahaica River, and is predominantly low coastal plain, with a small portion of the hilly sand and clay region further inland.

The population is concentrated along the coastland, particularly in Georgetown, the capital city.

Guyana's administrative and commercial activities are concentrated in this Region, especially in and around Georgetown, the main port.

There are many sugar estates, such as Diamond, Enmore and La Bonne Intention, owned and controlled by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO). Some residents of this region work on coconut estates, and many people have their own kitchen gardens. Cattle are reared in small amounts for beef and diary purposes.
