Barnwell is a Barrister and Solicitor by profession with experience in Education; Human Rights, Community Development. In 2015, she was appointed as an Opposition Senator for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the House of Assembly.

Honours and awards

She was a British Chevening Scholar for 2000- 2001.
