Former Cabinet Minister
Michel Christiaan Cambridge was a former economist, politician and Cabinet Minister in Suriname.
Early life and education
Michel Christiaan Cambridge was born on 18 November 1930. He graduated from VU University of Amsterdam with an economics degree in 1965.
Career
Cambridge, a former politician and economist, began his career as a teacher and later moved to the Netherlands for further study. After earning his economic degree he returned to Suriname.
He was first elected as a candidate of the National Party of Suriname in 1967. He was appointed as Minister of Construction (now Natural Resources) in 1973 in the first Henck Arron administration. He returned to this post in the second Arron administration.
After the 1980 coup, Cambridge was jailed on charges of corruption after military leadership took power. He was released more than a year later after no evidence was found but remained on house arrest for some time along with several leaders of the ousted government.
Death
Cambridge died on 9 June 2015 in the Netherlands. He was 84 year old.
