Senator Verla Depeiza
Former Government Senator, Barbados

Verla Depeiza is a Barbadian lawyer, politician, and a former Senator.

Early life and education

Verla Depeiza was born on 7 October 1971 in the parish of St James, Barbados. She was educated at The Erdiston Primary School and Harrison College and was a 1991 Barbados Exhibition awardee. She completed her tertiary education at the University of Southampton where she gained a Bachelor of Science degree in Politics and Law with Upper Second Class honours. Further education was undertaken at the Queen Mary College of the University of London where she achieved a Merit in the Master of Laws degree specialising in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Although she does not practise in the field, she is a trained criminologist.

Career

DePeiza who is qualified to practise in England and Wales, made the choice however to return to Barbados after graduation. Three weeks after her return to the country of her birth, she joined the Charlton Chambers, Whitepark Road, St. Michael where she remains in practice to this day, having been called to the local Bar in 2000.

Politically speaking, Ms. DePeiza has been associated with the Democratic Labour Party from her teenaged years. Even while studying in England she maintained close ties with DLP-UK. On returning to Barbados in 1996 she formally joined the Democratic Labour Party and began her tireless service under that umbrella.

She is no stranger to the political arena, having been active during the 1999, 2003 and 2008 general elections, as well as by-elections in St. Michael North West and St. John. In the 2008 general election she was nominated as one of the campaign managers for the Democratic Labour Party.

Depeiza is a former President of the Young Democrats and has held every elected post in her hometown branch of St. James North except that of Chairman. In addition, Ms. DePeiza is a past Assistant General Secretary of the Democratic Labour Party and has been a consistent representative on both the Executive and General Councils of the Party.

Verla DePeiza was appointed as a Government Senator on 16 March 2012. She was reappointed to the Senate under the current Freundel Stuart Administration in 2013.

DePeiza unsuccessfully contested the Christ Church West seat for the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in the 2018 general election.

Personal life

Depeiza is the proud mother of two children. Outside of politics, Ms. DePeiza is the District Co-ordinator of the Adventist Family Network (AFN) Grouping of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
