Sir David Gibbons, KBE
Former Premier of Bermuda

Sir David Gibbons was a Bermudian politician and businessman. He served as Finance Minister and later as Premier for the United Bermuda Party. He had also served as a member of the Parliament of Bermuda.

Early life and education

Gibbons was born in 1928. He studied economics at Harvard University.

Career

First elected to the House of Assembly in 1972, Sir David was first asked by Premier Sir Edward Richards to join the Cabinet as Minister of Health in 1974.

In 1975 Sir David was appointed Minister of Finance and the following year introduced a balanced budget and committed Government to repay the national debt.

As Premier he dealt with the riots in 1977 after the hanging of two men convicted of the assassination of Governor Richard Sharples, and a general strike in 1981.

During his leadership, the first legislative foundations were laid down for Bermuda's surging re-insurance and International Business. Sir David passed through a turmoil state of Bermuda's historical period and had to initiate social reviews and reforms. Result was the formation of Bermuda Human Rights Commission, Housing Corporation and various other social frameworks.

Sir David Gibbons also held the finance ministry during his tenure as the Premier of Bermuda. He also held various other senior management positions in corporate business like Chairman of The Bank of Butterfield, Colonial Insurance Co. Ltd., and as CEO of Edmund Gibbons Ltd. 

In business, Sir David served as Chairman of The Bank of N.T. Butterfield and Son Limited from 1986 to 1997, Chairman of Colonial Insurance Co. Ltd. since 1986 and as Chief Executive Officer of Edmund Gibbons Ltd. since 1954.

Death

He died on 30 March 2014, aged 85, after a short illness.
