Hugh Heyliger is an economist, politician and former Cabinet Minister in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Career

In 1984, Heyliger was elected to the National Assembly as the People’s Action Movement (PAM) candidate for St. Christopher #5.  He was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing, Labour, and Development in the Dr. Kennedy Simmonds led PAM/NAP Administration. He was reappointed to this portfolio following the re-election of the PAM/NRP coalition in 1993.  He continued to serve as Minister until 1995, becoming Deputy Prime Minister in November 1994.

Heyliger retained his seat in the 1995 election, but the NRP/PAM coalition was defeated by the Denzil Douglas led St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party.  Heyliger served as Leader of the Opposition for the period 1995 - 2000. In the 2000 general election, as the political leader of PAM, he however lost his seat to the SKNLP’s Jacinth Martin.
