Hubert Benjamin Hughes
Hubert Benjamin Hughes is an Anguilla politician and former Chief Minister.
Early life
Hubert Benjamin Hughes was born on 15 October 1933.
Career
Hubert Hughes unsuccessfully contested his first election in 1961, as Anguilla’s representative in the Legislative Council in St Kitts, he was 28 years old. Anguilla began holding separate elections under its own constitution, in 1972, and Hughes has contested every election since 1976.
Hughes was the island territory's Chief Minister from 16 March 1994 to 6 March 2000; after which he served as Leader of the OIpposition from 2000 - 2004.
Hughes' Anguilla United Movement (AUM) won general elections in 15 February 2010, defeating the Anguilla United Front of outgoing Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming. The AUM won four out of the seven seats up for grabs. Hughes was sworn in as Chief Minister on 16 February 2010.
Hughes did not run for re-election in 2015.
