Early life and education
He is a trained teacher and holds a University of the West Indies (UWI) Teachers Certificate, a BSc in Public Administration from UWI and a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relation from Rutgers the state university of New Jersey USA.
Parliamentary Secretary in Education, Science, Technology and Innovation in Barbados. Most recently he was a weekly columnist in the Barbados Business Authority, a moderator on the popular radio call-in programme Down to Brass Tacks and Chairman of the Board of Management of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.
He has also served as the Executive Director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC). In this role he was the chief advocate for Barbadian employers on all industrial relations and human resource matters. He also represented local employers at the international level and served on the board of the Caribbean Employers’ Confederation (CEC).
Senator Husbands was the General Secretary and president of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) and President of the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT).
He has served on several local boards and committees. For example he has been a board member of the National Insurance Scheme and the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC). Presently he is Government’s main spokesman on the board of the National Initiative for Service Excellence (NISE).
He has worked in the USA for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) in Trenton New Jersey.
Sandiford-Garner contested the St. James North seat in the 2013 general election for the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), but lost to Edmund Hinckson of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). He will be attempting to win the seat in the 2018 election.
