Sir Lawrence Joseph is a former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Grenada, and a former President of the Senate of Grenada.
Early life and education
Sir Lawrence holds a PhD (University of London), LLM (University of London), Barrister at Law (Lincoln’s Inn; London), and a B.Sc. Econ. (University of the West Indies). He was called to the Bars of England and Wales, and Grenada since 1977, after first qualifying and working as an Economist. He is a Notary Public.
Career
Sir Lawrence has served as Grenada’s Attorney General, and was a Magistrate for the early years in his legal career. He is an experienced Conveyancer, Civil and Public law Legal Advisor, and specializes in conveyancing, constitutional, administrative, land, company, banking, telecommunications and labour and industrial relations law.
He has also distinguished himself in a career highlighted by public service including serving as the Leader of Government Business, and Minister of Education and Labour of the Government of Grenada. He served as President of the Senate on two occasions - 1984-1988 and 2013-2014. He served as Speaker of the House of Representatives of Grenada from 9 January 2004 to 3 June 2008. He also deputizes for the Governor-General.
Sir Lawrence is presently engaged in private practice and is a Registered Citizenship By Investment Local Agent.
Honours and awards
In 2016, Sir Lawrence wasw accorded the honour of Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation (KCN) for his service to Grenada. Previously, he was honoured as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
