The Rt Rev. Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell
Anglican Bishop of Barbados
Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell is a Barbadian cleric and the current Bishop of Barbados.
Early Life and Education
Michael Bruce St. John Maxwell was born in 1971 in Barbados. He is the son of late Anglican Archdeacon Canon Malcolm Maxwell; and the grandson of the late merchant R.D.N. Maxwell.
He later attained an associate degree in accounts, economics and mathematics at Barbados Community College. He later attended Codrington College in St John, Barbados.
He received his secondary education at The Lodge School, Barbados.
On 4 June 2018, Maxwell was appointed an Independent Senator.
On 16 November 2018, Maxwell was appointed the 14th Anglican Bishop of Barbados. He succeeded the Most Rev. John Holder, Archbishop of the West Indies, who stepped down in February 2018. Prior to his appointement, he served from 2008 as the Rector of The Church of the Holy Trinity in St Philip, Barbados. He was previously attached to St Jude’s Church, St George.
Maxwell demitted his senate post following his appointement as bishop.
His Consecration and Ordination took place at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on 26 January 2019. He was enthroned on 28 January 2019 at The Cathedral of St Michael and All Angels.
Maxwell is married to wife Dawn Holder-Maxwell and the couple has two sons, Michael and Christopher.
