Senator the Hon. Kay Sharon McConney
Cabinet Minister, Barbados

Kay Sharon McConney is a Barbadian politician, and a current Cabinet Minister.

Early life and education

An outstanding athlete in high school, McConney won silver medals in the 100-metre hurdles at the 1982 Central American and Caribbean junior championships and the 1983 Caribbean Games and became one of the youngest student athletes at the time – 16 years old – to enrol in Eastern Michigan University. She graduated with honours in international trade, she secured an MBA in international business.

Career

McConney represented her country with distinction for seven years as Barbados’ top diplomat in Toronto, as an international trade negotiator at the World Trade Organization and senior United Nations representative in Geneva, Switzerland.

As an international development consultant, her work on programmes of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was published by the European Commission (EC). She has served as an expert resource, leading capacity building consultancies for international development programmes in the Caribbean, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); the United Nations Development Program (UNDP); and other international organisations.

On 27 May 2018, McConney was appointed a Government Senator and Minister of Innovation, Science, and Smart Technology in the Mia Mottley Adminsitration.
