The Honourable Mr. Justice Adrian Dudley Saunders
President of the Caribbean Court of Justice

Adrian Dudley Saunders is a jurist from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Since 2005, he has been a judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). He has served as President of the CCJ since July 2018.

Early life and education

The Hon. Justice Adrian Saunders was born on 4 January 1954 in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. 

At school he excelled in academics, sporting and social fields. He showed early signs of leadership, and was head boy in his final year at the Saint Vincent Boys Grammar School. 

Mr. Justice Adrian Dudley Saunders holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill) in 1975 and the Legal Education Certificate of the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad & Tobago in 1977. He was called to the Bar of St. Vincent & the Grenadines in that same year.


Following his course of studies Mr. Justice Saunders returned to Saint Vincent. remained in private practice as a barrister and solicitor from 1977 until 1996 at which time he was the Senior Partner in the firm of Saunders & Huggins, which became one of the most respected firms in the country. During this time, he also engaged in leadership roles, in civil roles and also participated in table tennis competitions in the region. 

As a lawyer, his leadership role was not limited to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Bar, but also as a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. He undertook some very important responsibilities, and developed the high respect of his colleagues in the region. 

Justice Adrian Saunders served as an Acting High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, assigned to the Dependent Territories of Montserrat and Anguilla, during September to December 1996. He was confirmed as a High Court Judge on 1 January 1997, and was elevated to the Court of Appeal 1 May 2003. Upon the departure of the Right Hon. Sir Dennis Byron, Justice Saunders assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice. He held this position from June 2004 to February 2005, and terminated his tenure of office with the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court on 31 March 2005.  In 2005 Mr. Justice Saunders was sworn in as a Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

During the period of his tenure as a Judge in the Eastern Caribbean, Mr. Justice Saunders was deeply involved in judicial education and judicial reform issues. He chaired the Committee established to introduce court connected mediation in the Eastern Caribbean. As Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the ECSC he presided over the production of a code of ethics for judges of the Eastern Caribbean. He also served as Chairman of the Judicial Education Institute of the ECSC from 2001 to 2004. He regularly participates in judicial education programmes for Judges from throughout the Commonwealth as a faculty member of the Halifax-based Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute.

Mr. Justice Saunders is currently the Chairman of the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO). He also chairs the West Indies Cricket Board’s Disciplinary Committee and is a member of the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct Commission.

Mr. Justice Saunders has written and published several legal articles and he is a Consulting Editor of The Caribbean Civil Court Practice.

On 4 July 2018, Justic Saunder was installed as the third president of the Caribbean Court of Justice. The installation ceremony took place in Jamaica, ahead of the opening of the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and was attended by prime ministers, presidents and premiers from the region.

Saunders will serve as president of the CCJ for seven years. 

Personal life

The Honourable Mr. Justice Saunders is married to Marilyn Angela née Joslyn and has two sons, Yuri and Yanek.
