Surinamese Labour Party (SPA)

The Surinamese Labour Party (Surinaamse Partij van de Arbeid, SPA) is a political party in Suriname.

The party was founded on 1 July 1987 by dozens of people including the unions affiliates Fred Derby (C-47), Siegfried Gilds (C-47) and Allan Li Fo Shu (CLO).  The latter two were then, in the transition period to the restoration of democracy, on behalf of the union minister.  Unlike the old parties were rather oriented ethnic grounds, while Surinamese Labour Party focused on people of all ethnicities, especially workers, farmers, women, youth and progressive intellectuals.

At the 2010 legislative elections, the party was part of the New Front for Democracy and Development that won 31.65% of the popular vote and 14 out of 51 seats in the National Assembly.  The SPA got one seat out of these 14.
