General Election
Results - 15 October 1951 |
General elections for all members of Legislative Council were held on Monday, 15 October 1951. This was the first election after the introduction of universal adult suffrage in 1951.
The Legislative Council consisted of the Administrator, two ex-officio Members, three Nominated Members, and eight Elected Members. The ex officio Members were the Crown Attorney and the Treasurer. The Nominated members were appointed by the Governor. Elected members were chosen by popular vote on a “first-past-the-post” basis.
The United Workers Peasants and Ratepayers Workers’ Union doubling as a political party under the banner of “Eighth Army of Liberation” fielded candidates for all eight seats at stake. There were also six candidates from the Worker’s Association and eight independents in the race.
The result was a victory for the Eighth Army of Liberation, which won all eight seats. Their election manifesto promised “A Better Day, A Brighter Day, and a More Prosperous Day.” |
