General Election Results - 12 September 1957

General elections for all members of Legislative Council were held on Thursday, 12 September 1957.

The Legislative Council consisted of the Administrator, two ex-officio Members, three Nominated Members, and eight Elected Members.  The ex officio Members were the Crown Attorney and the Treasurer.  The Nominated members were appointed by the Governor.  Elected members were chosen by popular vote on a “first-past-the-post” basis.

Three parties contested the election – The People’s Political Party (PPP), the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP), and the People’s Liberation Movement (PLM).  There were also six independents in the race.

The result was a victory for the Ebenezer Joshua led People's Political Party (PPP), which won five of the eight seats.  Voter turnout was 70.9%.

From 1960, St. Vincent, in common with the other Windward Islands, had a new Constitution, with its own Administrator and an enlarged Legislative Council.  Joshua became Chief Minister in January 1960.
