General Election Results - 20 Apr 1961

General elections for all members of Legislative Council were held on Thursday, 20 April 1961.  One seat was added since last elections increasing the number of elected seats to 9.

The Legislative Council consisted of the Administrator, two ex-officio Members, two Nominated Members, and nine Elected Members.  The ex officio Members were the Crown Attorney and the Treasurer.  The Nominated members were appointed by the Governor.  Elected members were chosen by popular vote on a “first-past-the-post” basis.

The election was a contest between the People’s Political Party (PPP) of Chief Minister Ebenezer Joshua, and the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) of Milton Cato.  Both the PPP and SVLP fielded nine candidates.  There were also two independents in the election.

The result was a re-election victory for the Ebenezer Joshua led People's Political Party (PPP), which won six of the nine seats.  Milton Cato’s SVLP won the remaining three seats.  Voter turnout was 77.1%.  Joshua continued as Chief Minister.
