General Election
Results - 22 August 1966 |
General elections for all members of Legislative Council were held on Monday, 22 August 1966.
The Legislative Council consisted of the Administrator, two ex-officio Members, two Nominated Members, and nine Elected Members. The ex officio Members were the Crown Attorney and the Treasurer. The Nominated members were appointed by the Governor. Elected members were chosen by popular vote on a “first-past-the-post” basis.
Although the Milton Cato led St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) received the most votes, the People's Political Party (PPP) of Ebenezer Joshua won a majority of seats (five of nine seats). Voter turnout was 84.1%. Joshua continued as Chief Minister.
On Friday, 7 April 1967, British Administrator for St. Vincent, Hywel George, revoked the appointment of Chief Minister Joshua, dissolved the Legislative Council and assumed complete control of the country. |
