General Election
Results - 26 June 1967 |
General elections for all members of Legislative Council were held on Friday, 19 May 1967, less than a year after the previous election of 22 August 1966.
The Legislative Council consisted of the Administrator, two ex-officio Members, two Nominated Members, and nine Elected Members. The ex officio Members were the Crown Attorney and the Treasurer. The Nominated members were appointed by the Governor. Elected members were chosen by popular vote on a “first-past-the-post” basis.
The result was a victory for the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP) of Milton Cato, which won six of the nine seats. Voter turnout was 82.6%. Cato was sworn in as the country’s second Chief Minister.
On 27 October 1969, St Vincent and the Grenadines was granted internal self-government, with Britain retaining responsibility for foreign relations and defence affairs. The Legislative Council was renamed the House of Assembly, the Administrator was designated Governor, and the Chief Minister became Premier. Cato became the country’s first Premier. |
