General Election
Results - 7 April 1972 |
General elections were held on Friday, 7 April 1972 for all the Representatives in the House of Assembly. Four seats were added since last elections increasing the number of elected seats to 13.
The result was a tie between the People's Political Party (PPP) and the St. Vincent Labour Party (SVLP), which both won six seats. Despite being a former member of the SVLP (which had received a majority of the public vote), the sole independent MP James Fitz-Allen Mitchell formed a government with the E.T. Joshua’s PPP. Voter turnout was 75.6%. Mitchell became the country’s second Premier with Joshua as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance.
On 18 September 1974, the House of Assembly passed a vote of “no confidence” in the Government after E.T. Joshua and his wife I.I. Joshua resigned from the Government following a disagreement with Premier Mitchell over policy issues. Parliament was subsequently dissolved on 23 September 1974. |
